SPRING 2020 Update

GREETINGS IN CHRIST’S NAME FROM AUSTIN CITY LUTHERANS! We consist of the ELCA congregations in and around the Texas capital city—and that includes you. Since its inception in 2011, ACL has sought ways to fellowship and minister in Austin following the simple moniker that we can do “more, better, together.”

Mariposa FLC officially opened on Thursday, January 30 to serve children and their families in SE Austin. Thanks be to God for persistence in vision as plans for this opening day go back almost three years to an ACL planning meeting in April 2017. ACL had neither land nor a building by which to carry out this mission. Mariposa moves forward with a “2-Gen” approach at the family learning center – toddlers educated in a high-quality environment and parents gathered in support groups to facilitate their access to resources for improvements in education, job training, and physical and spiritual health. Jan Richards serves as Mariposa volunteer coordinator. Let her know how you’d like to help out:

It’s time to get together! We have made wonderful progress with our shared ministries since we last gathered. We will focus on updates for Bread For All Food Pantry and the Mariposa Family Learning Center. You’ll have an opportunity to meet Mariposa staff and talk about plans for ongoing growth and expansion. Plus, financial updates and welcoming some new ACL officers. All leadership teams and members of Austin congregations are encouraged to participate. Light refreshments provided.

SUNDAY, MARCH 8, 2:00 PM – Abiding Love Lutheran Church – 7210 Brush Country Road · ATX · 78749

We’ll meet in the Sanctuary. ALL ARE WELCOME … please invite others from your congregation to join you!

Mariposa’s building was rehabbed in the latter half of 2019 by the sweat equity of more than 50 ACL leaders and volunteers. In the process, we’ve turned an older building at 403 Vargas Road in the Montopolis neighborhood that had sat vacant for more than two years into a living and breathing family learning center.

Additionally, deeply committed ACL congregations and individuals donated more than $165,000 to support this rehab effort and the first year of Mariposa’s operating budget. This wonderful support will enable Mariposa to become established as one of the few high-quality childcare programs for low-income families in SE Austin, categorized by the Austin City Council as a “childcare desert.”

Bread For All (BFA) Food Pantry continues to serve every Monday night from 6 – 7:30 p.m. (excluding major holidays) at Faith Presbyterian Church, across from Travis High School on E. Oltorf Road. Thanks to ACL congregations and members for great support with in-kind donations of imperishable food, offerings, and volunteer hours for set-up and distribution. BFA had its busiest month ever in January 2020. The economy is good for many Americans, but not all. BFA serves seniors on fixed incomes, homeless and handicapped individuals, and families living in poverty with young children.

Volunteer opportunities abound on Mondays for afternoon set-up and evening distribution. Come and join the community of volunteers and neighbors! Contact Pastor Tim Anderson (512)-653-7115 for more info.

Dee Jackson (Shepherd of the Hills) has been appointed Secretary of the ACL Board. Janis Coltin of Triumphant Love has been appointed vice-president. They join President Brad Highum (Abiding Love), Treasurer Steve Zwernemann (Faith), Tom Grevlos (Shepherd of the Hills), Tim Anderson (ACL Director, Abiding Love), and Dick Moeller (ACL Consultant, Triumphant Love).

ACL and Mariposa FLC are 501.c.3 non-profit organizations. Donations can be sent to Abiding Love Lutheran Church, 7210 Brush Country Rd, Austin, 78749, earmarked either “ACL,” “Bread For All,” or “Mariposa FLC.” Talk with your pastor, stewardship or outreach chairperson about your congregation’s support of ACL.
